Epidemiological study of sars-cov-2 in domestic felines resident in the cariri region
Estudo epidemiológico do sars-cov-2 em felinos domésticos residentes na região do cariri
Resumo
Coronaviruses are part of a large family of viruses, the Coronaviridae, which can affect animals and humans. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, a betacoronavirus, which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in humans. There are significant gaps in understanding the role of vertebrates in its transmission. In this sense, it is important to understand the evolution, adaptation and spread of this virus around the world, in order to obtain a better understanding of the transmission chain of COVID-19 and the participation of pets in this process. The objective of this research was to investigate possible cases of domestic cats infected with SARS-CoV-2 residing in the Cariri region, especially in the cities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha in the State of Ceará, Northeast Brazil, from January to December in 2021. In this study, 110 samples were randomly selected, with a day of the week being stipulated for each veterinary clinic to be visited. The cats were evaluated by a Veterinarian from the Clinic, who performed a clinical examination. During each consultation, the tutor answered a questionnaire about his animal. The collected serum samples were tested using the Chemiluminescence technology with the anti-Sars-Cov-2 antigen. Thus, only 5 domestic cats were reactive (4.5%).
