This text highlights the importance of implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) in the steel industry sector focused on pig iron production in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The text refers to the general scenario of pig iron production in Minas Gerais, addresses the main environmental impacts observed in the area of influence of the enterprises and the legislation directed at the sector. It discusses the behavior of the steel industry in the face of the need for environmental management plans and programs, and points out the possible competitive advantages of industrial companies that meet acceptable environmental and production control standards.
